Meeting Minutes

Meeting Minutes of August 2, 2010

Meeting was called to order by President Rudy Hill at 7:35 pm.  All members were welcomed to the meeting and Rudy welcomes guests San Mongle who owns a 1990 torch red coupe and Ken Hoover who owns a 1994 Admiral Blue Coupe.  Also Rudy then congratulated Ken Hoover on being the newest VOTS member and thanked him for his membership. Rudy then announced that we signed new members at our 2nd annual show, Mark & Diana Singleton from Lebanon VA .

Ann Hill stated no report from the Secretary and no minutes posted as no meeting in July due to the car show.

Drew Beck gave the Treasurer’s report and summary of the 2nd annual corvette show attendance being down 4 cars from last year with the rain potential, 50 50 drawing that was fabulous, silent auction that was double almost from last year, and stated that he hoped next year we can double our attendance.  This show is our main fundraiser for the year and it was  a great success.  After the treaurers report was reviewed, a motion made by Trae Larkin, seconded by Jeff Eaves and approved by all present.

Patty Larkin was not present for the meeting so Pam Napoleon gave the NCCC report.  There are 271 clubs in 16 regions for NCCC, with over 17100 members.  It is the largest non profit organization in the United States.

Then Pam presented her report on the  National Corvette Museum and stated that our new club banner at the museum is in the works and will be hung around labor day this year.  The motto for this year’s banner was “  Got Mountains…… We Ride Em.  Our club will receive the old banner that we can maybe hang at Logan’s in our meeting room.

Also Pam stated that the Museum is now offering insurance to clubs instead of NCCC.  The club requirements are between 14 and 500 members, its cheaper than NCCC and suggested we check into these amounts.

There is a new plant manager in Bowling Green effective August 1st.  The R8C reunion is August 12-14.  The next raffle is August 5th for a 2011 grand sport at $250.00 per ticket.  Also if you are a member of the museum and want to enter into a drawing to have your vette displayed in the front window, you must submit your application no later than August 12th.  The vette would be on display during the months of September October and November.

Cindy Larkin gave the Activities Director and stated that they just returned from the museum so her she will give the best she can.  The Broad Street cruise in is August 14th in downtown Kingsport.  The club picnic was a success at Strawberry Fields and the Jenkins have again reserved the Strawberry Fields clubhouse for September 5 from 6 to 10 pm.  Suggestion was made to use the hot dogs and hamburgers left over from the last picnic and for everyone to bring a dish.

Super Chevy show is September 25th

Jim Moore gave a briefing on Super Chevy show to be held on September 25th at Bristol Dragway and Bristol Motor Speedway.  Again he stated that we do not need to do anything for the show except if we want to do 50/50 and silent auction or any sort of raffle.  Bristol and Wellmont are working on music and other things for that weekend.  The jet car and robot car that eats cars will be on hand and display and our role is to promote the show.  Rudy then stated that we have handed out over 1500 flyers and emailed at least 50 clubs with information on the show.

Kris Steffen then thanked the Larkin’s for organizing the trip to Bowling Green.  Montana’s was wonderful which was much like Cuz’s in Bowling Green.

Rudy then said we are getting inquiries from the Meadowview for the Christmas Party and asked for a volunteer to chair the Christmas Party for the club.   Trae Larkin volunteered to do chair the Christmas Party however Trae then asked for someone to host the VOTSY awards during the Christmas party.

Trae went on further to state that the pictures from the 2nd annual show are posted on the FOTKI site – we will be emailing all participants to the show to contact Chris Duncan for a print of their vette at the start of the show.  Further information to come

Pam Napoleon further handed out awards from Napoleon Auto Repair to all members of the club who have participated in events and our show to thank them for what they do to make the club better.

Cindy Larkin stated that at the show an award was given for the youngest corvette owner and it was presented to her however it should have been presented to Lora Emory as she is the youngest.  Lora had left the show before the awards and therefore the error occurred in presenting that award.  Cindy gave the award to Lora at our meeting.

Debbie Tritt stated that she bought some stuff for her wheels and it even smells good, and if you don’t want to use it on your wheels you may be able to use it as deodorant since it has such a great smell.

Rudy stated that we ran out of orange shirts at the show for workers.  We estimated 24 workers and had more which was great but as a result we have several members who did not get an orange shirt and instead received  or can receive a yellow shirt.  Next year we will have better numbers from the past two years to go by for ordering shirts.  This was the first year we ordered a different color for the workers and it was well appreciated by the participants to know who to ask but at the same time we didn’t know how many to order, had 14 sign up to work and ended up with more than 24 working.  Our apologies however we know better for next year.

Club Picture was discussed as a group of our members went to the museum on August 1st and 2nd and presented the picture to the museum.  Inquiry was made where and when we will do a picture for this year and it was recommended for Kris Steffen to host the club picture set up again as she did a great job last year.  Further discussion of this will come at the next meeting.

Door prizes were awarded – lucky winners were Lora Emory and Jim Moore;  50/50 was $34.00 to the winner George Lamons.

On a sadder note, George Lamons advised the club members of the condition of Tim Monk who joined our club but then got sick.  He has cancer and is fighting the disease.  Also John Jenkins is having a heart stint put in on Thursday August 5th in Johnson City, and Frank Baria has 4 stints and bypass done recently.  Please keep them all in your prayers.

Finally it was voted on at the meeting that the next meeting of the VOTS will take place at the picnic on Sunday September 5 at Strawberry Fields, picnic time 6 to 10 pm,

No further business being conducted the meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.

With the holiday approaching and the 5th being the legal holiday since the 4th is on Sunday, we will NOT have a meeting on July 5th but ask our members to come out on the 7th and 10th to support the club.  It is the funds raised from the show that enable us to keep dues low and donate monies to local charities.

We will also have a truck at Ingles Grocery Store in Kingsport, Colonial Heights, on Tuesday July 6th at 6:30 pm to gather any water, door prizes or other items you can donate so we can have everything together on Wednesday when we stuff the goody bags.  If you cannot come to Greeneville on the 7th and have items please contact an officer of the club or come to Ingle’s on the 6th at 6:30

Trae discussed shirt design for the Bill Gatton show.  He presented a few designs that were passed amongst the membership and asked for those members that did not vote on line to vote for the design of choice from A or B.  B was chosen with the small logo on the front and larger print on the back with the vendor names under the logo.  Shirts will be yellow and discussion occurred about having a different color shirt for our members to wear the day of the show that will enable participants to locate host club members with questions or comments.  Trae asked to have all shirt sponsor names by the end of the week so he can prepare to send it to the printer.

Rudy brought to the members an offer from the Corvette Museum to hang our club picture in front of the Biltmore at the Museum.  The club photo was presented with frame at the meeting to be placed at Logan’s in our meeting room.  A motion was made by Drew Beck and seconded by Tim Steffen to keep the present photo for Logan’s and order a new print and have the members sign by their vettes to be framed and then sent to the Museum.  All present voted unanimously on this motion.  Kris Steffen will order the new print.

Meeting Minutes of March 1, 2010

Logan's Roadhouse, Johnson City, TN

Meeting was called to order by President Rudy Hill at 7:30 pm.  All members were welcomed to the meeting and no guests were present at this meeting however Rudy announced that we had two couples join this month, who have not attended a previous meeting and will be trying to attend one of our upcoming meetings or events.

Cindy Larkin gave us an activities report and had many items to review with us.  Upcoming events include the Maggie Valley show at the end of May, Charleston is quickly approaching for April 16-18, and Corvette Expo is the end of March.  There will be several going to the Corvette Expo so if you are interested please contact Cindy and she will coordinate time and place for us to go as a group.  The mystery dinner cruise could not happen in February  due to the snowy weather so all names were put back in the bag and this months lucky couple is John & Patty Larkin to plan our mystery dinner cruise.   As well we received communication from a corvette club from Capital City region of Ohio who are going to have 20 couples in the Gatlinburg area the weekend of June 24-27.  They would like to get with us and have dinner or ride the Tail of the Dragon together.  Cindy will contact them to see what we can coordinate to get the two clubs together for some time on that weekend.

Rudy gave us an update on the Bill Gatton show, he and Drew met with Chris Lee and the dealership is excited to have us do our show at their location again this year – he will as well donate the luncheon for all participants and the $500.00 to be given away during the day.  So with the two upcoming shows he asked everyone to start gathering door prizes, and silent auction items and sponsors for the trophies and T-Shirts for the Bill Gatton show.  Last year we raised enough on sponsorship to not have to take any money from the show proceeds for costs.

Trae discussed shirt design for the Bill Gatton show.  He presented a few designs that were passed amongst the membership and both he and Rudy are in the process of obtaining quotes from several distributors for multi color on the front and back of the shirts and shirt colors.  Also Trae then said that for new members they will receive a static cling of the VOTS logo so he distributed those to all new members present that had previously not purchased one.  We have extras in stock and thought it would be a great way to say thanks for our new members.  Also Trae reminded all that he still has colored silhouettes in static cling for your vette if you are interested,.

Roger Duncan gave us a Tech Talk – about seats, seat leather, and covers, and to check the quality and thickness of the leather and also to remember to check the seat foam before replacing the seat covers.  As well he recommends checking the lumbar support and skins on the seats.  Also if you lay the new seat skins in the sun or warmer area they are easier to work with and for application.  If cold you will be fighting them all the way.  You will need a pair of O ring pliers, but don’t buy the cheap ones at the auto parts store.  Get a good set otherwise a good OUCH will be heard around the area.

Door prizes were awarded – lucky winners were LaGina Vaught and Terry Lemons.  50./50 was $30.00 to the winner and the winner was Tim Steffen.

Webmaster Johnny Larkin was out sick.  Rudy reported that we have many members under the weather so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers for speedy recoveries.

Before new business, Rudy asked if anyone had anything else for the good of the Club.

Bob DiMaggio gave us an interesting recap of the Mecum Auto Auction that he attended in Florida in January, including his story of the bidder in front of him that bought over $500,000.00 in vehicles.  He sat on the bleachers all day watching the sights and sounds and recommends it to everyone interested in cars and auctions. Ask Bob for further information and more great stories.

Next was new business.  Rudy gave the members a summary of the Corvette show that has been being discussed with Bristol Motor Speedway and Super Chevy weekend.  Numerous meetings have been held with reps from Bristol and Rudy and Jim Moore from Wellmont.  The summary for the show is as follows:

$100.00 entry fee pays for admission to the corvette show, with judging and trophies; entry for two to attend the Super Chevy show for two days; entry to the Super Chevy grand spectacular show Saturday night; 5 laps on the Bristol Motor Speedway track; a commemorative picture, T-Shirt, Dash plaques, and complimentary hot dog and hamburger meal at the Bruton Smith Suite at the Dragstrip.  Package number two is for $65.00 which includes admission to the corvette show and 5 laps on the speedway.   $20.00 of each entry fee will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network in the name of Vettes of the Smokies Corvette Club and Bristol Motor Speedway.  The Vettes of the Smokies will receive a $1,000.00 check from the show for our promoting and work on the show.  Vendors will have to pay for spaces, costs will be $250.00 - $500.00 depending on size of the set up area.  The National Corvette Museum will not have to pay for any space for this show if they can attend.  T-Shirts and dash plaques will be paid for by BMS and our club logo will appear on both items.  Vots will be able to do 50/50, silent auction, raffle for an item, door prizes and any other items to make additional monies.

Secondly we have been contacted by Bill Gatton Chevrolet to have our second annual show at the dealership on Saturday July 10th.  Everything will be the same as last year with Bill Gatton providing the $500.00 to be given away during the day and also providing lunch for all participants and larger area for parking.   Our club would be responsible for all we did including t-shirts, dash plaques and trophies.

Drew made a motion for the VOTS to do both shows as presented and seconded by Roger Duncan.  Discussion occurred amongst the members, Rudy answered questions, Jim Moore made a few comments on the show and its impact on the community and Children’s Miracle Network charity, and others made comments and observations.   A show of hands of our members was done for those interested in participating in the BMS show and paying the $100.00 fee.  Most members present had their hands up.

After all discussion, motion was presented for vote on the VOTS doing both shows as presented.  A show of hands of all members present was unanimously passed to do both the BMS Super Chevy and Bill Gatton Shows.

Additional new business item was Kris Steffen announced that she brought a print of the VOTS in front of the Biltmore and asked all that were there to sign the poster so it can be presented to the Biltmore.

Tim Steffen gave us a brief description on his and Kris’ time in Las Vegas at the Ron Fellows Driving School, where they were doing 122 on the back stretch and were told they were only using 30% of the corvettes capability.  He will share pictures and other information with our members.

Roger Duncan presented Tech Talk to our members on how to clean and polish plastic pieces on the vettes especially the bezel around the shifter, around the vents and the speedometer area.  There are now cleaning pads made for these specific plastic areas and cleaners that adhere to the pads.  All you have to do is apply a small dot to the pad and wipe on the plastic pieces and it will look brand new.  3M has kits for plastic.  Go soft on plastic not to rub it too hard.  If you use too much product the plastic will lose its UV protection and you may have to repolish those items more times.

Door prizes were distributed to Bethany DiMaggio and Jim Moore.  50/50 was $40.00 and the winner was Drew Beck.  Birthdays were announced for February.

Trae Larkin then presented the VOTS with a plaque made for the annual Spirit Award.  It will be for a member to be recognized every year for their outstanding work for the VOTS.  The recipients will receive a certificate of its award and then a metal plate on the plaque will be engraved with the recipient’s name and year.

Discussion occurred about displaying the plaque and picture of VOTS at Logan’s in our meeting room.  We have authorization for that however we need to come up with a display case and area.  Further discussions will be forthcoming on this matter.

Rudy then announced that our guests, John & Kathy Jenkins, have completed our member form and are our newest members of the Vettes of the Smokies.  Congratulations to the Jenkins and welcome to our club.

With no further business meeting adjourned.

Ann Hill gave the Secretary’s report which included reading a thank you letter from the Sullivan County TN Sheriff’s Office for our club donation to Sullivan County Animal Shelter.  Ann also reported that the minutes will be published to the website this month

Drew Beck offered the Treasurer’s report which as he stated was his second shortest treasurer’s report, consisting of 4 lines.  It’s a new year and 1st report is short.  Motion was made by Kris Steffen to approve the treasurer’s report and seconded by Jimmy Napoleon, approved by membership.

Patty Larkin stated that there is no news from NCCC to start the year but that she did monitor the dues and reports and all was received and processed by NCCC.

Pam Napoleon gave us a report on the National Corvette Museum.  The Corvette store has a rear bumper apron on sale for $47.00 which is used when you are accessing the rear storage so the deck lid will not be scratched.  She stated that when we buy from the Museum we are supporting ourselves and the corvette legend.  All monies spent at the museum are used for its continued development. Pam also gave a quick brief on the C5-C6 bash upcoming in April this year.  She would love to see many of our members make this trip to support the museum, and have a great time at the bash.

Johnny Larkin , our webmaster, stated that he has been posting pictures as he receives them from our members, and reminded everyone to send their pictures in any format.  He can access most of the applications and can then post them to our website.

Cindy Larkin, our activities director, distributed a calendar of many of the upcoming events for 2010.  There are many more events out and if you are interested in attending something not shown on the list, please contact Cindy and she will gather the info and pass it on to the members.  Cindy also discussed with the members our Mystery Dinner Cruises, which is where one of our members is selected and picks a location to take the club members on a ride for dinner, brunch or whatever they choose.  It was agreed to restart these dinners in this slower winter season and this month, Kris and Tim Steffen, were selected to host the mystery dinner cruise

Bob DiMaggio asked to speak a few words of thanks – he said that in the aura of not breaking down that he wanted to offer his thanks for our members respecting their privacy, for the flowers, cards, prayers and thoughts during their difficult time in December with the loss of his daughter.  Bethany DiMaggio also thanked everyone and said that their thoughts and concerns were some solace to them during that difficult time knowing that we all care.  Rudy then told them both that we are there for anything they need at all.

Old business was discussed which included our second annual Christmas Party.  Ornaments were distributed at the Christmas Party and Ann asked for any comments or suggestions for the next Christmas party.  Ann then distributed ornaments to those that were not present at the Christmas party and were present at the January meeting.

Jimmy Napoleon displayed and presented a Chrome Corvette License Plate Frame for C-5’s.  They have purchased a large quantity and are selling them for $25.00 – if you are interested in purchasing one please contact either Jim or Pam Napoleon.

Rudy then introduced Safety Talk 2010.  Various discussions will come throughout the year to talk about highway safety when we are caravanning to events.  Rudy stated that he used to be a Motorcycle Safety Instructor and many of those rules pertain to any caravan and to our corvette caravans.  If you find yourself traveling with a group of our vettes or any group of cars, and the lead group proceeds and the second half of the group is stopped at a red light, the rest of the group should proceed at normal or just below normal speed.  If a turn is made by the first group before the second group regroups with the first, the last car in the first group should stop on the shoulder indicating the turn.  That way the second group will see that the first group is turning and that way they can rejoin the entire group.  If no turn is made, the 2nd group should assume that the group has continued to straight and will drive at a safe speed to resume with the 1st group.  More safety news will be coming at future meetings

No Tech Talk was done at this meeting

Birthdays were announced by Pam Napoleon for Jim Moore, Jack Jones and Wade Emory.  Birthday cake was presented, Happy Birthday was sung, and cake was distributed for everyone’s enjoyment.

50/50 was won by Kris Steffen and Door Prizes were presented and distributed        .  With no further business, meeting was adjourned.
